Thanks to Volunteers, Seniors at Armory Lane Get Raised Beds!

5/26/2017

Seniors at Armory Lane in Vergennes love to get outside and garden, but some folks have mobility issues that make it hard for them to garden in low flower beds.  Yesterday, two intrepid volunteers, Joe and Melissa, built the first of two 3' raised beds that will make gardening at Armory more accessible to all residents.  They braved unseasonable chilly weather and rain, but they persisted.

Armory Lane is home to about 30 seniors and has an active SASH program.  An important focus of the SASH program is 3-4-50: three behaviors that lead to four chronic diseases that cause 50% of all early deaths in Vermont.  Of the three behaviors, two are lack of physical activity and poor diet (the third is tobacco use).  Promoting gardening at Armory is a way to encourage physical activity, and hopefully grow some nutritious foods to improve diet.

Thank you Joe and Melissa!  We can't wait to see what seniors plant this summer.

Save the Date: Smart Growth Summit

5/12/2017

The Vermont Natural Resources Council will be hosting a Smart Growth Summit on Friday, June 16, at Champlain College in Burlington.  Speakers will discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with meeting housing and transportation needs and how Smart Growth can serve those needs.

ACCT has won Smart Growth awards in the past, including for a clustered development of single-family homes on the town green in Hancock.  While designated downtowns attract much of the development energy around Smart Growth, smaller villages can benefit from this kind of design as well.

For more information and to register for the event, visit the VNRC website.

  • Discuss strategies to advance the recreational economy and how trails and recreation serve as economic drivers
  • Explore the role that trails and recreation play in our rural working landscape as well as in our downtowns
  • Learn about successes, opportunities, and challenges in developing new trail systems and integrating recreation and community development
  • Hear what the future holds for larger regional trails systems and recreation paths in Vermont communities

More information is available on the VCDA website at www.vtcda.org/events.
