While mobile home parks often can offer greatly affordable places to live, in one key way they lag behind rental apartments as an option for low-income Vermonters: many of the expenses associated with living in a mobile home park (e.g. property taxes, loan payments, and insurance) are not eligible for Section 8 Rental Assistance.
That may be about to change, thanks to an amendment introduced by Congressman Welch that just passed the House. The amendment to H.R. 3700 would allow Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers to cover property taxes, insurance, utilities, and financing, in addition to lot rent, which is currently an eligible expense. We'll be sure to follow the bill's progress as it makes its way through the Senate. |
